MediaLight Mk2 v2: What's new with the latest update to the MediaLight Mk2 v2?

We've made significant upgrades to the MediaLight Mk2 v2, enhancing nearly every aspect of its performance.

At Scenic Labs, our goal is to provide the most accurate and reliable bias lighting for color-critical environments. The MediaLight Mk2 has been a trusted choice for professionals and enthusiasts alike. With the Mk2 v2, we've incorporated key improvements based on your feedback to ensure it remains the best in the industry.

Here are the changes and upgrades we've made based on your input:

What’s New Inside the Box?

Improved Adhesive

We’ve upgraded from VHB (Very High Bond) adhesive to Ultra High Bond acrylic adhesive. This new adhesive is clear and provides the most spectrally-neutral backing, eliminating issues with red tinting from exposed red plastic backing in less-than-ideal installations. To make installation even easier, we’ve added a starter tab to the adhesive backing—no more struggling to peel off the plastic.

Optional Nano Tape Included

We understand that many users are concerned about leaving residue on expensive equipment. To address this, we’ve included a 3-meter roll of residue-free nano tape with all 2-7 meter units. Our 1 meter strips include several 8cm x 8cm sheets pre-cut into 8cm x 1cm strips.

This tape provides a strong bond that removes cleanly without leaving residue. However, we determined that using nano tape directly on the back of the LED strips was too strong and could damage the strips during removal, so it remains an optional adhesive solution.

Redesigned Remote Control and Improved Brightness Control

The remote control has been redesigned with a cleaner look and improved functionality. We’ve increased the brightness control to 150 stops, up from 50, providing more precise control, especially in the crucial 0-20% range. This enhancement is particularly valuable for professionals who require exacting levels of ambient light. Where the previous version had 10 brightness levels between 0-20%, the new version has 30 brightness levels.

Flicker-Free Operation and Slow-Fade On/Off
The new remote control operates at 25 KHz, marking it as our first remote-controlled flicker-free dimmer, compared to the previous 220 Hz dimmer. Although only a small percentage of people are aware of their sensitivity to PWM dimming, eliminating flicker is believed to enhance comfort for all users.

The slow-fade feature eliminates flashing artifacts that occured with some TVs, such as Sony Bravia, and provides a smoother experience for users.

Improved USB Switch Wiring
To support the growing demands of longer MediaLight strips and additional dimmers, we’ve thickened the copper wiring for the USB switch. This reduces resistance and maximizes available current, ensuring consistent performance across all setups.

For our global customers, the interface has also been changed from on/off to the universal O and | symbols.

Additional Mounting Clip Options

We’ve included new flat "PCB strip" clips in addition to the previous wire clips. These clips are perfect for attaching the strips over removable panels, like those found on some Sony TVs, allowing for easy removal and reattachment of the panels.

We've also included a few pairs of Velcro tabs, which are great for sticking the remote where you won't lose it, or for attaching the on/off switch to removable panels.

Improved LED Consistency
We’ve reduced the target variance in LED chips from  +/-100K to +/-50K. This improvement cuts the color temperature variance in half, ensuring even greater consistency across the entire strip. The LEDs previously also integrated together at the target 6500K, but the tighter binning provides more flexible installation options and improved consistency.

Packaging Updates for Global Compliance
We've updated the packaging to meet international sales requirements. The new design includes measurements in both imperial and metric units, and features EU insignia for CE, RoHS, and disposal compliance.

These refinements reflect our commitment to making the MediaLight Mk2 the best bias lighting solution available. Building on the insights we've gained over the past four years with the first version of the Mk2, we’ve made targeted enhancements that we believe will significantly elevate your user experience and continue to set the standard in bias lighting.

Thank you for your continued trust in Scenic Labs. We’re excited to bring you these improvements and look forward to hearing your feedback on the MediaLight Mk2 v2.
